Early Life and Education

Stella Rose Bennett was born on January 30, 2000, in the Grey Lynn neighborhood of Auckland, New Zealand. Her original stage name was “Bene,” but she added an extra “e” for copyright and phonetic reasons. Benee’s “musically minded” family meant that she was introduced to music at a young age. She grew up on a diet of Radiohead, Bjork, Lily Allen, and Amy Winehouse.

Benee started learning guitar at the age of 8. She took up the saxophone in high school and took lessons. But after a while, she switched her attention to water polo.

She also went to the Catholic all-girls school, St. Mary’s. The school’s required music class lasted for four years. At the age of 17, she began composing and recording her own songs. As a result, she stopped playing water polo. She left two weeks into a communications course at Auckland University of Technology.

Benee Professional Career

Benee got her start in the music industry by posting cover versions of her favorite songs on the website SoundCloud. By her senior year of high school, she was already writing and recording her own songs.

She decided to pursue music actively after abandoning her college studies. Very quickly, she caught the attention of producer Josh Fountain of the band Leisure.

Using the stage name “Bene,” she released her first solo work, the song “Tough Guy,” in 2017. The success of her 2018 single “Soaked” propelled her to the spotlight. In 2018, the song peaked at #58 on Triple J’s annual Hottest 100 chart and was awarded “double-platinum” status in New Zealand.

Her first EP, Fire on Marz, was published on June 28, 2019, with the help of Josh Fountain. Her contract with Republic Records had been signed earlier that year. The EP had a high position of position 75 on the Australian Albums Chart and position 13 on the New Zealand Albums Chart.

Her second EP, Stella & Steve, came out on November 15 of that year. It reached #19 on the New Zealand Albums Chart and appeared on the same charts as significant hits in the US, Canada, and France.

The EP’s last single, Supalonely, featured Gus Dapperton and became a worldwide phenomenon in March 2020 thanks to a TikTok dancing competition. Despite being about a failed relationship, Supalonely became a quarantine anthem during the COVID-19 epidemic.

This tune topped Rolling Stone’s March Trending 25 chart. Also, it reached the top 40 on the RS 100 list. In December of 2019, a similar dance challenge helped her song Glitter go popular.

During the month of June in the year 2020, Supalonely logged over 250 million streams. When she did it on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, it marked her first time performing on television. On Ellen, she sang the song live.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on what was supposed to be Benee’s first headlining North American tour, which was going to be supported by Remi Wolf.

In 2020’s July, Benee released the single Night Garden, which featured the American producer Kenny Beats and the British artist Bakar. It will serve as the debut song from her forthcoming studio album.

Back in November of 2019, she took home the trophy for Best Solo Artist at the New Zealand Music Awards. At the same ceremony, her song “Soaked” was named “Single of the Year,” and she was named “Best Breakthrough Artist” and “Best Pop Artist.

Her singles “Glitter,” “Find an Island,” and “Evil Spider” all charted on Triple J’s “Hottest 100” in 2019.

She became the first musician from New Zealand to be included as Apple Music’s Up Next artist for the month of July 2020.

Benee’s first album will be released in October 2020, and she’ll go on a headline tour in New Zealand that same month.
