Scandals
Lorde postponed her December 2017 performance in Israel after a campaign by Palestinian activists in favor of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement led to her canceling the show. Nadia Abu-Shanab, a Palestinian New Zealander, and Justine Sachs, a Jewish New Zealander, both wrote open letters as part of this internet campaign, encouraging Lorde to cancel her tour because of the Israeli government’s repressive practices. Lorde thanked her fans and following for enlightening her about the Israel-Palestine conflict in a statement posted to Twitter after she canceled her tour.
Many people who support the Palestinian cause were happy to hear that Lorde had decided to cancel her trip to Israel. However, her acts were criticized by several pro-Israel advocates. Also pushing the singer to rethink her cancellation were statements from the Israeli ambassador to New Zealand, Itzhak Gerbeg, and the Israeli minister of culture and sports, Miri Regev.
A full-page ad by American rabbi Shmuley Boteach captioned “Lorde and New Zealand ignore Syria to attack Israel” ran in the “Washington Post.” And he went so far as to call her a “bigot”. John Cusack, Roger Waters, Angela Davis, and Mark Ruffalo, among others, responded to Boteach’s poster by publishing an open letter in “The Guardian” in support of the New Zealand musician’s stance.
